On May 17, 1964, Bob Hendley (Cedar Rapids Braves – 1958) led the San Francisco Giants to a 6-0 win over the New York Mets pitching a complete game shutout. Hendley struck out 5 batters while only allowing three hits and one walk in the win.

Bob Hendley finished his 7 year MLB career with a 48-52 record and a 3.97 ERA while playing for the Braves, Giants, Cubs and Mets.

On May 16, 1989, Kurt Stillwell (Cedar Rapids Reds – 1984) went 3-4 at the plate with two HR, four RBI and two runs scored in the Kansas City Royals 8-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Kurt Stillwell hit .249 with 34 HR and 310 RBI in his 9 season in Major League Baseball. Stillwell played for the Reds, Royals, Padres, Angels and Rangers.

On May 15, 2009, Erick Aybar (Cedar Rapids Kernels – 2003) went 3-5 with a double, triple and a HR in the Angels 10-8 loss to the Rangers. Aybar finished the game with two runs and 2 RBI.

Aybar hit .308 with six HR, ten triples, 57 RBI and stole 32 bases in 125 games for the 2003 Cedar Rapids Kernels.

This date in Kernels history – May 14, 2006 – Nick Adenhart

On May 14, 2006, Nick Adenhart improved to 6-0 on the season and led the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 2-1 win over the Clinton Lumberkings. Adenhart worked seven innings striking out eight batters while allowing one run on seven hits in the victory.

Nick Adenhart posted a 10-2 record and a 1.95 E.R.A. in 16 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2006. Adenhart struck out 99 batters in 106 innings of work. He was selected to the 2006 Futures Game roster, played in the 2006 Midwest League All-Star game and earned Midwest League post season All-Star squad honors. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 65-74 record under manager Bobby Magallanes.

Nick Adenhart was a bright young pitcher who played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2006, and was a rising star in the Los Angeles Angels organization. Adenhart made his MLB debut on May 1, 2008. Only hours after Nick’s 2009 season debut on the mound for the Angels, a drunk driver tragically killed him on April 9, 2009 at age 22. Adenhart compiled a 1-0 record with a 6.00 E.R.A. in four career starts for the Angels.

On May 14, 1964, Ron Hunt (Cedar Rapids Braves 1960-1961) went 3-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in the Mets 12-4 win over the Milwaukee Braves.

Ron Hunt hit .273 with 39 HR and 370 RBI during his 12 year career playing for the Mets, Dodgers, Giants aned Expos. The two-time all-star was hit by pitches more often than anyone during his playing days.

On May 13, 1975, Jerry Reuss (Cedar Rapids Cardinals – 1967) pitched a complete game shutout as the Pirates defeated the Padres 2-0. Reuss struck out 12 while allowing three hits and two walks.

Reuss finished his MLB career with a record of 220-191 and a ERA of 3.64 over his 22 years playing for the Cardinals, Astros, Pirates, Dodgers, Reds, Angels, White Sox and Brewers.

This date in Kernels history – May 13, 2007 – Warner Madrigal

On May 13, 2007, Warner Madrigal pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn the win as the Kernels defeated the Clinton Lumberkings 7-6 in ten innings. Madrigal struck out one while allowing three hits in the victory.

Warner Madrigal posted a 5-4 record with 20 saves and a 2.07 E.R.A. in 54 games for Cedar Rapids in 2007. Madrigal struck out 75 batters in 61 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs. Madrigal played for the Kernels as an outfielder during the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Warner Madrigal made his major league debut on July 2, 2008 with the Texas Rangers. Madrigal compiled a 0-2 record with one save and a 6.10 E.R.A. in 44 games during two seasons (2008-09) for the Rangers. He struck out 27 batters in 48 2/3 innings of work. Madrigal appeared in a pair of games for the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees – AA) in 2011.

This date in Kernels history – May 12, 2007 – Ryan Mount

May 12 has been a rough day on the Cedar Rapids Kernels during my tenure. This is the first date of the season where our squads have not won a game in the last seven years. We are 0-4 with three rain outs. Maybe this year will be the end to the streak.

On May 12, 2007,  Ryan Mount went 1-2 at the plate with a HR, a RBI, two walks and scored a pair of runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Clinton Lumberkings 12-6. Ryan Mount hit .251 with 11 doubles, 7 HR and 36 RBI in 85 games during the 2007 season for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 78-61 record under manager Ever Magallanes. The Kernels lost to the Clinton Lumberkings in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Ryan Mount hit .329 with 12 doubles, 5 HR and 34 RBI in 47 games playing for the Arkansas Travelers in 2011. Mount is starting the 2012 season with the Arkansas Travelers.

This is my 8th season (2005-present) working as the stadium operations guy here with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. I will be reminiscing the best performances by the Kernels during my tenure to add to my This Date in Kernels Alumni History features this year.

On May 12, 1970, Denis Menke (Cedar Rapids Braves – 1958, 1959) went 4-5 with a HR, four RBI and a pair of runs scored in the Astros 8-3 win over the Dodgers.

Denis Menke was named to two All-Star teams in 1969 and 1970 as member of the Houston Astros. He played in the post season twice in 1972 and 1973 with the Cincinnati Reds and hit a home run off Oakland’s Catfish Hunter in Game 5 of the 1972 World Series.

This date in Kernels history – May 11, 2010 – Patrick Corbin

On May 11, 2010, Patrick Corbin pitched eight innings while allowing a pair of runs (one earned run) to earn the win and improve to 6-0 on the season as the Kernels defeated the Beloit Snappers 5-2. Corbin struck out three while allowing three hits in the victory.

Patrick Corbin posted a 8-0 record with a 3.86 E.R.A. in 9 starts for Cedar Rapids in 2010. Corbin struck out 42 batters in 58 1/3 innings of work. Cedar Rapids finished the season with a 82-56 record under manager Bill Mosiello. The Kernels lost to Clinton in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Patrick Corbin made his major league debut on April 30, 2012 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Corbin was acquired along with Joe Saunders (2002), Tyler Skaggs (2010) and Rafael Rodriguez (2003-05) in exchange for Dan Haren on July 25, 2010. He has compiled a 2-1 record with a 4.50 E.R.A. in 3 starts for the Diamondbacks this season.
